Chapter 020
The Word of God
Section I

The Bible says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” – Jn 1:1 The Word has always existed alongside the Speaker. He is the great “I am” Who has always lived – “He ever lives” – Heb 7:25. “While as yet He had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. When He prepared the heavens, I was there” – Pro 8:26.

“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;” – 1 Jn 1:1. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. – Rev 1:8. He is the Living Stone that God chose as the Cornerstone (the first stone to be laid) of His building that He planned to build. – 1 Pet 2:4.

“In the beginning” is also “before the foundation of the world”. God the Father loved His Son even before the foundation of the world – Jn 17:24. Christ was “foreordained before the foundation of the world”. – 1 Pet 1:20 to be the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the whole world.

Hmm. He is the Amen – the Affirmation of the plan of God – the “Yes” of God – the Aum (ஆம்/ஓம்,) and the Executer – CEO – of the plan of God. He is seated at the right hand of the Majesty after fulfilling His part on earth.

The “Cosmic sound” the Eastern religions promulgate is the Word. He was not actually a meaningless “sound” but was the content-rich expression of the wisdom of God. (Prov 8) that brought Cosmos out of Chaos.

Observed closely, there is no Western religion as such – all religions originated in the East – Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Jainism, Confucianism, Taoism, Baha’ism, and even Christianity (if one would want to call it a religion). Men of the Christian religion migrated to the West (Americas) long ago resulting in Christianity being wrongly called a Western religion.

(கட உள்). Cross over. Enter. God set His foot on the earth. Is it not His footstool? God had always wanted to dwell among men, His superior-most creation. He communed with them in the Garden of Eden. He dwelt among the Israelites in the Tabernacle and later in the Temple at Jerusalem. (The Tabernacle and the Temple were only a reminder of God’s presence among His people – God did not actually dwell in it – He does not dwell in temples made of hands, never did and never will). God in His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, dwelt among the people of Judea two millennia ago. Christ Jesus came into the world - 1 Tim 1:15. God dwells ever since, in the hearts of people in the person of the Holy Spirit. He will take His people to the place that He has been preparing for them so that they will be with Him forever.

Is Christ eternal? Yes. He is not a created being. In fact, He created all that God uttered. He is God’s word. The Word has been with God all along His existence – even in the beginning – John 1:2. Any attribute that belongs to God is Christ’s. In other words, Christ and God are inseparable – Advaitha. This is life eternal: to know the One (Advaitha) true God and Jesus, the one He has sent. – John 17:3. Christ is the very visible image of this one true God. He was born a man as Jesus, nearly two thousand years ago, to show men who God is like. And He remains eternal in glory now. Meanwhile, His plan is underway. Jesus has already finished His part of the plan on earth and is just waiting for the “it is done” moment, the culmination of the plan of God for His people, and the accomplishment of the purpose of God of bringing more sons to glory. The end has been determined. He is merely overseeing the unfolding of the events that He has already foreseen and finished.

The world was made by Him. – John 1:10. All things were made by Him, and without Him was not any thing made that was made. – Jn 1:3.

Where did life originate? And when? These two questions have been of extreme interest to mankind. Man has tried in vain to create life. The Urey-Miller experiment ended up producing protein molecules that are unlike the ones that are building blocks of living tissues. Neither did Louis Pasteur produce any microbe. The media (which is in control of the Devil) is rampant with material claiming that a Craig Venter “created” life and named it “Synthia”. He took a DNA of a single-celled bacteria, synthesized an artificial sequence, injected it into a cell emptied of its original DNA, and saw it multiplying. (like Viruses do always). Gullible men are fooled by such Satan’s tricks. Man has not, cannot, and never will be able to produce life because life is in Jesus Christ. (John 1:3). Jesus is the origin of life. And life originated with Him in the beginning – even before Time began.

Why doesn’t mankind believe in this fact? Because, even though this life which is the Light of men shines, the darkness that mankind is in, does not allow one to comprehend/understand/grasp/accept this true Light – John 1:5. And men loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. – John 3:19.
Jesus is the light of the world and He will remain so as long as He is here in the hearts of His believers. (Gautama Buddha was called the Light of Asia who sadly, failed to find light in his own life. It is probably about such Teachers that Jesus said blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. – Matt 15:14). In Jesus was life and the life was the light of men. Darkness is the absence of light. God did not create darkness. Sin brought darkness into the world even in the beginning. Since the advent of Jesus, people who lived in darkness have seen a great light. This Light lights every man that comes into the world. Then does one become the light of the world himself, as the Light dwells in him/her. Light has dual nature – waves and packets. Jesus is 100% God and 100% man.

This Word took the form of man in the likeness of sinful flesh – Rom 8:3 and dwelt among us right here on this earth. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. – John 1:14.

The word of God exposes the will of God. Logos, in Greek, is the spoken word with a general reference to that which is in the speaker’s mind. The Son of God sprang forth from the Father. The Word of God revealed God’s will and executed it perfectly.

The Word was made flesh:
• to call sinners to repentance – not the righteous – Luke 5:32; Mark 1:17
• to save sinners – 1 Tim 1:15
• to save the world – not to judge – John 12;47
• to seek and to save which was lost – Luke 19:10; Matt 18:10
• to give His life a ransom for many – Matt 20:28
• that He might deliver us from this present evil world – Gal 1:4
• to deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage – Heb 2:15
• to destroy the works of the devil – 1 John 3:8
• to destroy him that had the power of death – Heb 2:14
• that His sheep might have abundant life – John 10:10
• to send a sword/division – not peace (separate the believing from the unbelieving – not to bring a compromise) – Matt 10:34
• to send fire on the earth – Luke 12:49 – to consume evil
• to do the will of His Father – not His own – John 6:38; Heb 10:7, 9
• to fulfill the law – not to destroy it – Matt 5:17
• to bear witness unto the truth – John 18:37
• to minister – not to be ministered unto – Mark 10:45
• for judgment (of Israel), that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind – John 9:39

While Jesus, as a man, had a will of His own, He submitted His will to His Father and carried out His Father’s will from His childhood to His death on the cross. “Not as I will, but as Thou wilt”, was His prayer at Gethsemane.

We don’t know much about His childhood in the scriptures except for one instance when He visited the Temple in Jerusalem with His mother Mary and Joseph. But we can be sure that He did the will of His Heavenly Father all along because, when the very next incident mentioned happened – at the river Jordan, when He came to be baptized by John the Baptist – the Father testified of Him, “This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased”. This was even before He began His ministry, even before He preached one sermon, even before He performed one miracle or cast out one evil spirit.

It is about Him that prophet Isaiah foretold: “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulder and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. – Isa 9:6.

Apostle Paul also mentions Him, “Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him and given Him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. – Phil 2:6-11.

Is Jesus the Father? No. Jesus is the Son. While Isa 9:6 (the only instance in the scriptures) states that the Son (also mentioned in the same verse) will be called the Father, Scripture must be interpreted by Scripture.

Jesus Christ is God and so, eternal. So, divinity is attributed to Him in this verse; this is in line with the statement of Jesus “I and My Father are One” – John 10:30 and “he that hath seen Me hath seen the Father. – John 14:9. The Father and the Son are one in substance but different in persons. Jesus Christ is the Son of God – the perfect representation of the Father in human form. While Jesus is divine, as a human being, He set aside His divine attributes to confine Himself in a body. Anyone who does not confess His humanity does not have eternal life but is an antichrist. However, this revelation does not come to one unless the Son reveals it to the individual. – Matt 11:27.

Unitarian is a cult that spreads the doctrine that Jesus is the Father and Jesus is the Holy Spirit. This is contradictory to the Apostles’ doctrine: the One indivisible (Advaitha) God the Father Who expressed Himself in His Son Jesus as God has sent down His Holy Spirit to indwell men as God. There are many verses and portions in the Scriptures that bring out this unity and distinction clearly. The creation scene (Gen 1:26), the occasion of the baptism of Jesus at the river Jordan (Matt 3:16,17) and the one at Calvary (Heb 9:14) are undeniable evidences.

Can Jesus be addressed as Abba, Father (Yesappa in Thamizh)? Are Christians children of Jesus (Yesappavin pillaigal)? While children (and spiritual babes) would still love to address Jesus “Abba”, mature believers know that the Lord himself addressed the Father “Abba” (and He still does as “the Man up in glory” – 1 Tim 2:5. The Lord Jesus is God’s only begotten Son (Jn 3:16) but He did not hesitate to also become “the firstborn among many brethren” – Rom 8:29. Jesus has shared His sonship with His chosen ones. That is why He taught them to pray, “our Father in Heaven”. He also instructed Mary, after His resurrection, to tell His “brethren” (obviously includes His sisters too) that He was ascending to “My Father and your Father” – John 20:17. How much He yearned to be called their “Brother”! (and friend, elsewhere in Scripture). Jesus Christ, the heavenly Bridegroom’s betrothal has surely not happened with His daughter!

What is this unique Name given to Jesus – the name above every other name?

Jesus (Easan / Yeshuva) is not a unique name – many had their first name Jesus in the first century AD. Jesus is the Aramaic equivalent of the Hebrew name Joshua meaning deliverer/savior, which many in the Old Testament times were named after. So, ‘Jesus’ speaks of the verb “save” that He came to accomplish – (i)Ratchagar / இரட்சகர் in Thamizh. The name above every other name is most probably “I AM” (இருக்கிறேன் or “Always” according to David Pawson). He was given this name even in the beginning because the Purpose of God was determined and His Plan completed even in the eternity past. It is just the unfolding of His Plan that is happening in Time.

The Lord revealed His Name to Moses in the burning bush. When asked His name He answered, “I am that ‘I AM’”. None can boast of holding this Name because everyone has a beginning unlike the Lord Jesus Christ: He is the eternal God. In fact, He is the Beginning of the creation of God. That is why, while He was incarnated, He spoke of Himself as the “I AM”.

Here are some instances where Jesus referred to Himself as the I AM:
• I AM – Mark 14:62; Luke 22:70
• I AM Jesus – Acts 9:5
• I AM with you always – even to the end of the world – Matt 28:20
• I AM the bread of life / living bread – John 6:35 / John 6:51
• I AM the light of the world – John 8:12
• Before Abraham was, I AM – John 8:58
• I AM the door of the sheep – John 10:7
• I AM the good shepherd – John 10:11
• I AM the Son of God – John 10:36
• I AM the resurrection and the life – John 11:25
• I AM the way, the truth, and the life – John 14:6
• I AM in the Father – John 14:10
• I AM the true vine – John 15:1
• I AM Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. – Rev 1:8; 22:13.

And if we don’t believe that He is the “I AM”, we will die in our sins. – John 8:24.

Here is an interesting event in the eternity ahead: The Lord Jesus Christ still remains the Word of God. He is the same, yesterday, today, and forever.

And I saw heaven opened and behold a white horse; and He that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness, He doth judge and make war. …and He had a name written, that no man knew, but He Himself. And He was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and His name is called The Word of God. – Rev 19:11-13.
