Chapter 050
Abraham and Lot
Section I

How can’t Lot be in His-story? Lot was Abram’s nephew. He left Ur along with Abram. Due to some domestic disputes between his servants and Abram’s (the land was not able to bear them!), he chose Sodom, a fertile green land to dwell. Soon, four Kings most likely led by King Chedorlaomer made war with the king of Sodom and took him captive. Lot’s belongings and servants were also taken. Abram ambushed them and brought back Lot’s belongings. But, the people of Sodom (and Gomorrah / Kumaran / Qumran) were leading an ungodly and abominable lifestyle. Homosexuality, incest, and sodomy were the order (!) of the day. But Lot was “that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds” – 2 Pet 2:8. The Lord decided to judge the cities for their sin was very grievous. He disclosed to Abram that He would destroy them. Abram, concerned about Lot, started interceding for his nephew. Would God destroy the two cities if there were righteous people in them? Fifty? Forty-five? Forty? Thirty? Twenty? Ten? The Lord said He would not destroy the cities if He would find ten righteous.

The Lord was mindful of Lot. He sent His angels to save Lot and his family for Abraham’s sake. The angels were in human form and the people of the city were so perverse that they wanted to “know” them too. The Lord performed a miracle and blinded their eyes that they failed in their attempt to enter Lot’s house. Then, the angels dragged them out by hand and led them out of the city. Once out of the city, they instructed them not to look behind. Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven, And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground. But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. – Gen 19:24-26. The Salt Sea region of today (in Israel) is said to hold the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah at its bed.

Not long afterward, the daughters of Lot committed the sin of incest with their father (they made him drunk) and brought forth Moabites and Ammonites who have been enemies of the promised generation ever since. Beware the environment you bring up your children in! It might have a serious influence on them leading to evil habits, manners, and sinful lifestyles.

Here is the point to note. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, while here on earth a little more than two thousand years ago, told His disciples that during the end-times of this earth, a similar environment will exist as it was in the days of Lot. “Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed”. – Luke 17:28-30. Today’s world is no different. Satisfying the lust of the flesh and gratifying the body (with food and sensual pleasure) are the primary activities that are keeping people preoccupied. Consumerism is multiplying at an exponential rate. eCommerce and social media have contributed heavily to the explosion of this lust-filled trend and have succeeded in reaching literally every pocket of the gullible. The whole world is busy buying and selling, planting and building. There is no doubt we are already in the end-times.
