Nabal and Abigail in His-story
Section I
Nabal was a great man from the house of Caleb with a thriving sheep-shearing business. While Abigail, his wife was a wise and beautiful lady, he was churlish and evil in his doings. The beauty and the beast!
David sent ten of his men to Nabal requesting him for assistance in exchange for the protection that his men had been providing to Nabal’s flocks and herds from attackers. But Nabal being “such a son of Belial that a man cannot speak to him” – 1 Sam 25:17, verbally abused David and sent them away denying them even food. Hearing about this rebuff, David set out to wipe out all that pertained to Nabal and the very beast himself.
Satan provoked David to commit murder for sustaining his ego, thus discrediting himself and diminishing his privilege of becoming a blessing to the world because David was in the line of the believing lot that would bring forth the Son of God into this world. Abigail a woman of wonderful sagacity and prudence was God’s instrument for the moment.
One of Nabal’s servants rushed to Abigail with the information. Immediately, she took enough rich food with her to meet David and his men halfway. She diffused the tension and pacified David, falling at his feet. She averted manslaughter in the hands of the anointed of God.
Post the death of Nabal sometime later, Abigail became the wife of David and begot him a son, his second, named Chileab.
Satan failed to achieve his objective again. Could he launch another direct attack on his target? Lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh, and pride of life would be his weapons once more.
