Do you serve Him best or do you also serve?

The second part of a famous Sonnet by John Milton titled "On his blindness" goes like this:

"Doth God exact day-labour, light denied?" I fondly ask. But Patience, to prevent That murmur, soon replies: "God doth not need Either man's work or his own gifts: who best Bear his mild yoke, they serve him best. His state Is kingly; thousands at his bidding speed And post o'er land and ocean without rest: They also serve who only stand and wait." -John Milton

Jesus said, "Come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and you shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. -Matt 11:28-30.

Sin is the heaviest burden every man bears all his lifetime, not knowing how to get rid of it. This is literally witnessed in South India when devotees carry a double-knotted black bundle (irumudi in the local language) on their heads while on a pilgrimage to the abode of their deity to earn favor. This goes on without end almost every year!

"Would not someone lift this burden off me?", is every laboring man's cry, rightly depicted in the character of the traveler (sarcastically named Christian!) in 'Pilgrim's progress' by John Bunyan. And, providentially, the traveler arrived at Calvary, the very place where occurred an exchange of a humongous proportion. The heaviest of all burdens was exchanged for a light one.

Jesus, the Lamb of God took upon Himself the sin of the world and bore the punishment which should have been borne by every sinner. Jesus gives His righteousness in turn, to the believer who comes to Him for forgiveness. He, as Life Himself, offers the believer His own life. This life is a totally God-dependent life richly aided and empowered by His indwelling Spirit. This is why, this life would be 'light' in contrast to a 'self-dependent' life. In a self-reliant / independent life, every self-made decision would have a bearing on the outcomes, all of which have eternal consequences most of which are negative too, hurting and destructive. A God-assisted life is directed by God Who helps in making decisions and equips the believer in executing His plan. Since God knows the end of everything even from the beginning, decisions and activities directed by Him are the best for every individual.

And, Jesus, the Savior of the world, calls everyone to Him for this exchange. "Come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest".

Coming back to Milton, all believers who bear His mild yoke serve Him the best. They bear it without complaints or even without requesting, praying or expecting God to make it milder. They simply trust God to lead them through in the journey of life, come what may. They do not murmur when things do not go their way. They know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.-Rom 8:28.

There is a second kind of believers who don't probably understand that the life that Jesus gives in exchange of theirs is indeed a light one. (Is it because they do not rely on Him for everything big and small that comes by during life's journey but have made their own decisions?) They keep waiting for God to interfere (after they have messed up something?) and change the circumstances in their favor. Such people who 'only stand and wait' fall in the category of those who 'also serve'.

Are you one who serve Him best?
