Is Information Technology promoting ethical environment?

Technology keeps evolving by the second today. And there are rewards and global awards for every invention and discovery that can make life of mankind easier and liveable. The irony is, life has become more and more complex with every new technology emerging to beat and replace the previous one. (Incidentally, more Jews have been awarded the Nobel prize for science and technology than any other people in the world). What is supposed to make life safe and sustainable ends up in its abuse in the hands of the greedy and the control-freaks.

• The advancement of the technology has thrown all privacy out of the windows (Windows!). Profiles shared via Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Twitter are no longer confidential. They are available to everyone and can be accessed by every Tom, Dick and Harry. In fact, a complete biography of a person can be constructed with the information available on the internet. Christians believers are not exceptions. They keep posting their status unmindful of the risks they pose to themselves as well as to the people about whom they post information.

• Hackers and info-thieves are waiting outside with hawk eyes twenty-four bar seven seeking to devour the innocent public. Children fall a prey to the attractions and enticements of these anti-social elements. Christian parents who aren’t vigilant over their children’s social media behaviour are letting them into the hands of Satan who can destroy them even before we have the slightest clue of what they are up to.

• Free apps in smartphones are a great attraction to young and the old. What risks come along with them are of no botheration to them as long as the app is free. Beware, there is a technology cliché doing the rounds: “If something is free, then you are the product”. Believers are getting addicted to online games and spend their valuable time in it unmindful of the fact that they are wasting their irrecoverable time. Moreover, repeated use of gadgets and apps slowly turns into addiction and withdrawing from it produces a trauma.

• The advent of Cloud Computing has forced business to look at this technology as an alternative to their own data centres. But they are risking control of their data once their data moves to the Cloud. Again, this technology is becoming an oligopoly – being owned by a handful of top players. And IT vendors are consolidating their positions by mergers and acquisitions leading to the disappearance of weaker players. Christians are ignorant of what is happening in these fronts and take little or no interest to perceives the implication of such top-level moves in the corporate space. Everyone in some way or other contributes to the concentration of these powers which is sure to backfire in our everyday lives soon. eCommerce is one such prominent technology enabled service that everybody has got trapped in right now. Result? Traditional businesses are closing down rapidly.
