Who is Melchizedek?
Abram fought a guerrilla-style war against four kings, slaughtered them and brought back Lot’s goods, cattle and people from captivity.
And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. And he blessed him, and said, “Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand”. And he (Abram) gave him tithes of all. – Gen 14:18-20.
So also, Christ glorified not Himself to be made a high priest; but He that said unto Him, “Thou art my Son, today have I begotten thee”. As He saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. – Heb 5:5, 6.
Jesus is the Great High Priest and was made a high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. – Heb 5: 8; Heb 6:20.
While there are diverse opinions on this personality, the portions underlined in the narrative found in the epistle to Hebrews in the New testament, clearly points to One – the Lord Jesus Christ. “like unto the Son of God” is similar to a phrase in the book of Revelation “one like unto the Son of man” – Rev 1:13. (“made” does not mean He was created but “made to appear”) as He has “neither beginning of days, nor end of life”. (In fact, there is no “made” in the Thamizh translation of the original Hebrew manuscript removing all ambiguity).
For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abides a priest continually. – Heb 7:1-3.
The Lord Jesus Christ is the King on His throne and a High Priest forever.
