Why did God create hell and the lake of fire?
The everlasting fire was prepared by God for the devil and his angels. – Matt 25:41, not for mankind. God loved man so much that He wanted them to live a peaceful and joyful life in a community. So, He gave them laws and commandments, which when kept, will create a conducive environment for them to live in harmony with God, as well as with fellow beings.
However, He also warned them that when these commandments are broken, the unbelief on His word and the disobedience that will follow will lead to conflict, acrimony, bitterness, war, pain and death – not just physical but an eternal separation from God – hell and everlasting fire.
It is so sad that man wants to break free from God and His laws. (also the physical laws He has set in place, like the law of gravity, which when attempted to be broken will lead to adverse results). Man refuses to comply with God’s laws and so, brings pain and death to himself and his fellow men.
John continues, “And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him that sat on the horse, and against His army. And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone”. – Rev 19:19, 20.
And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. – Rev 20:10.
And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. – Rev 20:14.
And I saw a great white throne, and Him that sat on it, and I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. – Rev 20:11-13.
And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. – Rev 20:15.
And the smoke of their torment ascends up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receives the mark of his name. – Rev 14:11.
(But), the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars (dogs and whosoever loveth and makes a lie – Rev 22:15), shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. – Rev 21:8. Rev 21:27.
The Lord knows how …to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished: But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise government. Presumptuous are they, self-willed, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities. …But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption; And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you; having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children: which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, …who loved the wages of unrighteousness; but was rebuked for his iniquity: …These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever. For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error. While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage. – 2Pet 2:9-19.
Likewise also, these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities. …these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves. Woe unto them! These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withers, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever. – Jude 1:8-13.
Jesus spoke more of hell than of heaven while here on this earth. It is a real place of eternal torment and unending pain. Here are some instances from the Gospel according to Matthew, the first book in the New Testament:
Whosoever shall say (to his brother), “Thou fool”, shall be in danger of hell fire. – Matt 5:22; The whole body should be cast into hell. – Matt 5:29, Matt 18:9; The whole body should be cast into everlasting fire. -Matt 18:8; Fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. – Matt 10:28; But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. – Matt 8:12; And whosoever shall not receive you (disciples of Jesus), nor hear your words, it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city. Matt 10:14, 15. The judgement shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment than the unrepentant cities (like Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum) who had witnessed the mighty works of the Lord – Matt 11:21-23; The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Matt 13:41,42; So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, and shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. – Matt 13:49, 50.
