Why were the missionaries from Britain hated by the Indians?
European traders started colonising the country from Portugal, Holland and France until Sir Thomas Roe officially visited the Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zaffar as the representative of the British Queen.
Imperialist nations started occupying territory and Britain gained upper hand. India became a British colony with the other Europeans letting go their control eventually – some of them after a long time.
The European travellers were followed by European Missionaries whose primary intention was to spread the gospel but in the European way. There was a serious cultural clash and they were are accused of westernising the country through their language, education system, printing technology, their fashion and their lifestyle. This resulted in the murder of the already existing Christian church in India, the original Indian Christian community slowly receding and losing its identity completely.
European Christianity – predominantly Roman Catholic – started taking roots against the sentiments of the local Indian public who considered these missionaries as religious conversionists that have invaded their land to put an end to the local religions.
